Europe – Bag Of Bones – Album Review

Europe

Bag Of Bones

Ear Music

Out Now

It’s 2012 and the impressive longevity of the band Europe continues. Many people will know Europe for their unforgettable song The Final Countdown which even after all these years continues to rock the airwaves and TV screens usually ending very high in the rock video categories of VH1 and MTV. Most fans will not hear a bad word said against the band and with this release Europe have evolved once again and they continue to do so with every album release that they bring out. The last album of theirs that I listened to was Start From The Dark which came out after a thirteen year break from music. There has been another break here this time of three years following 2009’s Last Look At Eden which was highly acclaimed by critics and fans alike.
For this release the band, fronted by the irrepressible Joey Tempest have called on the services of rock music producer supreme Kevin Shirley who you might have heard of, being responsible for gems from Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, Black Stone Cherry and Journey.
The album opens with a lovely, heavy Riches To Rags with Joey and Guitarist John Norum doing their stuff showing that with any type and length of break, Europe can still strut their stuff and rock out beautifully. The album has a lot of energy and passion showing through and Joey’s voice is one of the most distinct that you could hear in rock.

The band are:
Joey Tempest – vocals
John Norum – Guitar
John Leven – Bass
Mic Michaeli – Keys
Ian Haughland – Drums

The album’s first single Not Supposed To Sing The Blues is the next track and this is a bit of monster strutting, anthemic and with a great hook which gets under your skin real fast. Personally I would have chosen Doghouse which is track number nine and to me is far more immediate.

The quality throughout is high and with Kevin Shirley twiddling the knobs the power is as always on show and most welcome. Mercy You Mercy Me near the end of the album has a really fantastic dose of rock guitar riffage and has kept a place in my rock play list for a good few weeks now. Scorching!
For me this album tops my favourite Europe album so far Start From The Dark. There is melody throughout and more than enough rock credibility to keep scoffers at The Final Countdown silent and long time fans happy.
There are many standout tracks on this album including a surprise appearance from Bluemaster Joe Bonamassa who is always busy and happy to lend his fingers and inspiration to quality music.
Europe are working hard all the time and will be touring the UK in November. Have a look at their tour dates here
